ETERNAL LIFE
___________________________
___________________________
As Christians, we have all heard of one the most familiar scripture which is, John 3:16.  It seems as
though everybody knows that verse from a very young age, yet it is not understood by many as far as
the depth or length of its application and eternal value.
John 3:16 For God so greatly loved and dearly
prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ( unique) Son, so that whoever believes in
(trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal
(everlasting) life. (AMP)

It is true that Jesus did come into the world to die as the Innocent Lamb of God, and it is true too, that if
than this.  We cannot stop short with this Word, and live a victorious life IN Christ. This is where many
Christians stop. They never grow beyond this Word, and therefore, they remain spiritual dwarfs living in
their dark misconceptions and deceptions, all the while feeling like they are spiritual giants.  They do
not understand that, they must "practice the knowledge of the truth", in the entire Gospel.  The real
message of the gospel, is that your heavenly Father desires to give you an everlasting life, when you
walk in the obedience of His Word.  It is only in this way that we truly know God.  Knowledge of His ways
comes by living IN His Son.

The night before Jesus' crucifixion, He was praying, and He said to His disciples,
John 17:3  And this is
eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You,
the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the
Messiah), Whom You have sent.
We read here, that everlasting life is knowing the Father, the only true
God, and also knowing Jesus Christ, whom He has sent.  This is what everlasting life is all about.  Life
for the Christian believer is found IN CHRIST.  And since Jesus is the very embodiment of Life itself,
then our eternal life is found only In Him.  Jesus said in:
John 14:6-7  Jesus said to him, I am the Way
and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.  If you had known Me
[had learned to recognize Me], you would also have known My Father. From now on, you know Him and
have seen Him.

It is a misconception to think that when a person dies they cease to exist. The facts concerning this
issue, is that, every person who has ever lived on the face of the earth will continue to live in spirit
form. Eternal life is living forever, and yet, eternal life is not given to everyone.  Clarifying this subject a
little further, it is a common declaration by many people to say, "Eternal life is living forever in heaven
verses living forever in hell."  But we must remember what we spoke in our verse in
John 17:3, "to
know God and Jesus Christ".
This is more than an intellectual or cerebral knowledge.  The word,
"know" is used throughout scripture to describe the most intimate, personal fellowship that you can
ever have.
So much is missed in our modern evangelism today as "salvation" is presented as a proposal to escape
the flames of hell and accepting Christ's offer of salvation is like an "insurance policy", for that "just in
case day", or if we should need Him in time of trouble, we can pull Him out of our hip pocket and make
our requests, yet all the while,we do not know Him nor have we been obeying what His Word commands.
The real purpose of salvation is not living forever in heaven, as wonderful as that will be.  The real
purpose of salvation is to have intimacy, which is a deep personal relationship that grows into joyous
fellowship delighting in the knowledge and reverential and obedient fear of the Lord. There are
countless numbers of people who have cried out to God for the forgiveness of their sins, but have
never had intimacy with God as their goal.

By not explaining the real purpose of salvation, we are doing a disservice to the Gospel of Our Lord,
Jesus Christ. When we present salvation as something that deals with just spiritual things that will only
benefit us in the future, in eternity, we are not helping people.  There are some people who are living in
such a literal hell right now on this earth.  Many are depressed, living in poverty, dealing with strife,
rejection, hurt and failed marriages.  People are just trying to survive day to day.  By making salvation
something that deals with the future, many people put off that decision because they are too busy just
trying to survive today.

The purpose of God in the creation and salvation of mankind, through His Son, Jesus Christ, is to
produce in mankind a kindred likeness, a holiness or radiant purity, like that of God Himself.  The truth
is that Jesus not only came to affect our eternal destinies so that we can live forever in heaven in
blessing instead of the punishment and curse of hell, but also to deliver us from this present evil world
(Galatians 1:4).  Jesus came to offer you intimacy and a personal relationship with His Heavenly Father
now this day.

Jesus came to bring you back into close, personal relationship with Himself.  Jesus loves you.  Jesus
wants to you to know Him personally.  Jesus wants to give a quality of life that is far greater than
anything, you could obtain through any other source.

Jesus states it this way in
John 10:10:  The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came
that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). God wants to
give you abundant life, and this offer for now, this day!
Christ died not only to forgive your sins, but to
bring you close to Himself.  If you don't know the Lord, you need to know Him for that purpose.  If you
have already been born again, you need to go beyond just pleading for the forgiveness of your sins.  It
is time to really enter into eternal life with your heavenly Father, this day.
